Raquel Fonseca

Biography

Raquel Fonseca is a full professor at ESG UQAM, affiliated researcher at RAND Corporation and fellow at the Centre interuniversitaire de recherche en analyse des organisations (CIRANO). She is co-holder of the Industrial Alliance Research Chair on the Economics of Demographic Change. She has published a multitude of scientific articles, in international journals on the topics of the economics of aging, health and the labour market. Her current research pertains to the impacts of reforms on social security, employment and well-being, in addition to the interaction between health, financial savings, and retirement, in models specific to life-cycles.

Professor Fonseca possesses a wealth of experience and expertise in the analysis of microdata, on diverse studies pertaining to the subject of the aging of the population. She is involved in many projects funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the U.S. Her research is also funded by the Conseil de recherche en sciences humaines (CRSH) in Canada and the Fonds de recherche du Québec. She previously worked for five years as an economist at RAND Corporation in the U.S. and as a professor at the RAND Pardee Graduate School of Public Policy.

Dr. Fonseca has received a Master’s in Economics at the Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), in Belgium, and a Doctorate in Economics at the UCL in 2002.

Research Program

Dr. Fonseca is interested in the interactions between social and economic variables, with a focus on the economics of aging and exercise, cognitive decline and the labour market, as well as mental health, well-being and retirement, in addition to poverty and health.
